In 2014, The Journal of The American Dental Association published research that suggests implant survival and success rates in general dental practices may be lower than those reported in studies conducted in academic or specialty settings. http://jada.ada.org/article/S0002-8177(14)60087-8/abstract
The success rate in this study of 920 implants placed in general dental settings was only 81.3%. Implant success in academic and specialty practices is reported to be between 95% and 97% in many studies performed over many decades. No specific cause for this significant difference in success rates was given, however, training and experience in preforming this very exacting procedure must be considered.
